As winds whipped across the shoreline in Brooklyn, so did the smell of diesel on Christmas Day.
On Boxing Day it was discovered a work boat owned by Cooke Aquiculture, had sunk at the wharf on Shore Road, leaking fuel and fish feed.
The 15-foot boat seems to have been a casuality of the Christmas Day storm, however a spokesperson from the Coast Guard could not confirm the cause of the sinking.
Locals noticed a strong smell of diesel in the area on the evening of December 25 and throughout Boxing Day.
“The Canadian Coast Guard’s Environmental Response Team has been on scene and monitoring the owner’s response and will ensure all proper steps are taken,” says Coast Guard spokesperson Steven Bornais.
He says it’s believed only a small amount of fuel leaked.
“Indications are only a small amount of fuel was released from the work boat, a boom has been deployed and divers have plugged fuel vents on the boat.
A feeder from the vessel was pulled out of the harbour yesterday and booms were set up along the shoreline near the wharf to catch the spillage.
The Cape Island style boat remains underwater.
The owners will attempt to recover the boat some time today, weather permitting.
