Former Nova Scotian Rebuilding Life After Fort Mac Fire

Almost three months ago the lives of thousands of Albertans literally went up in smoke.

After the mass evacuation of Fort McMurray many are falling into the routine of their new ‘normal’.

Trish Henneberry moved west from Nova Scotia after college.

She hasn’t been back to Fort Mac but has seen pictures and says the destruction was overwhelming.

“I was living there,” she says. “I was getting ready and going to work…I had a normal life a few months ago. Now it’s all gone.”

Henneberry and her fiance fled to Edmonton where she says they’ve been welcomed with overwhelming generosity.

“We were going to buy a couch from a [Newfoundlander] and told him our story. He ended up giving us his couch, his dresser, his 60 inch TV, and the stand it came on all for free, just so he could help us out.”

has been able to find work in her new city but she says it will take some time before they’re back on their feet.

She says she’s unsure if she’ll ever return to Fort Mac but she’s grateful they’re alive and together.
