Four Awesome Ideas Vying For $1000 Award

Every month the Awesome Foundation of the South Shore gives away $1,000 for someone to do something awesome.

People pitch their idea and the Trustees of Awesome decide who will be awarded the money.

Four people have made pitches this month.

Taylor Widrig and her mother are hoping to be the lucky recipients for a colouring and recipe book they’ve created based around Mermaids.

The book educates children on healthy eating and how to be respectful of the ocean environment.

“It would allow it to add value to our brand in addition to the social impact.”

The money would be used for printing with a portion of the proceeds being donated amongst several charities.

Stella Bowles wants the money to buy water testing kits to distribute to kids across the province.

Bowles says it’s important people know about the quality of the water in their rivers.

“Because it’s our waterways, it’s our future. If you want to go swimming you don’t want to have to worry about getting sick.”

She says in partnership with Bluenose Coastal Action foundation she would travel the province showing kids how to perform the tests then post the results on her Facebook page.

Jackie Belliveau wants to use the money to set up a pre-teens fitness kick-boxing course.

Belliveau, who is a trainer, says it’s fantastic exercise and great for kid’s self esteem.

“It’s one of those things where you don’t have to be good at anything else to be good at this. It’s really confidence building, it’s a stress reliever, it’s a team sport.”

She says she’ll use the money to buy the necessary protective gear such as pads and gloves.

Adam Culbert is hoping to get the money to upgrade the sound system for his business, Atomic Entertainment.

Culbert says he takes on a number of charity events and wants to be able to provide them with the best sound possible.

“It’s hard to invest in business when I’m doing charitable events. So the whole idea for the thousand dollars is to invest in my company and help to keep my rates low.”

The Awesome Foundation will announce the winning pitch Friday from the stage at the Big Ex.
