An independent panel says a fuel shortage in Nova Scotia last August was a wake-up call.
The two person panel has determined a delayed shipment to the terminal in Dartmouth, combined with quality issues resulted in the shortage around the province.
Panelist Doug Keefe says Imperial Oil has taken steps to reduce the risk of a three-day shortage from happening again.
“They have, since this event, upped their reserves and their re-order pattern, which has the effect of improving the security of supply.”
Irving will also re-open its Halifax terminal by the end of next year.
Panelist Alphonse MacNeil says the fuel shortage was not an emergency, but it had potential.
The panel says the fuel shortage caused an inconvenience and anxiety for most people.
The province is implementing 21 recommendations to improve planning and communication to avoid a disruption in supply.
