Government signalled they will address a major concern in their Education Reform Act.
Proposed changes to the Education Act are making their way through Law Amendments Committee.
One of the main issues for opponents of Bill 72 is the omission of an Inclusive Education policy.
The committee introduced an amendment today to ensure students with special needs will share the classroom with children their own age.
Education Minister Zach Churchill said a report is coming at the end of the month that deals exclusively with improving our inclusion model.
However, on an issue this important to government and to Nova Scotians, there should be absolute clarity and for that reason government is reintroducing the language in an amendment.
But Education Commentator Grant Frost wonders what else government may have overlooked.
“That’s inexcusable. How do you still pursue a bill that an average Nova Scotian has found a major error in, with any good conscience?”
Frost predicts if this bill goes through as it is, there will be significant issues in schools next year.
“And as those problems are exposed and revealed to be issues, we’re going to have the blame squarely at the feet of this government.”
Law Amendments Committee will continue to hear from the public on the new Education Bill until 8:30 tonight.
