Government Spending Focuses on Healthcare, Roads

Highways and healthcare are the major focus of the Nova Scotia government in their 2019-20 capital plan.

The province has earmarked $300-million for road work and almost $157-million for Health Care Redevelopment projects.

Overall, the capital plan totals $691.3-million.

Finance and Treasury Board Minister, Karen Casey, says healthcare is top of mind for Nova Scotians and the plan shows how important it is to government.

“From new and renovated operating rooms to improved cancer care services to the construction of a new community outpatients centre, we are transforming how some of the province’s most specialized health services are delivered.”

The province is also investing $63.1-million to build, purchase and renovate schools.

Casey says the province has been focused on being fiscally responsible and sustainable since they were elected in 2013.

“Maintaining this fiscal discipline ensures we can continue to make important investments and provide opportunities for Nova Scotians now and into the future.”

Meanwhile, South Shore residents will be able to see some of the work being done that’s included in the capital plan.

Healthcare funding was continued for ongoing projects like the South Shore Regional Hospital emergency department and ICU expansion and primary healthcare facility improvements in Shelburne.

Roads will also be maintained.

The major project is Highway 103 twinning from Upper Tantallon to Ingramport and then Ingramport to Hubbards.

Road construction is also scheduled from Auburndale Road westerly to Monk Road in the Municipality of Lunenburg.

And in the Municipality of Chester, work will happen on the East River bridge and roughly 1.3 kilometres of Trunk 3 from Duke Street to Wake Up Hill Road.
