A historic site in Lunenburg is getting some body-work done.
The province is investing $400,000, and Waterfront Development is investing an additional $200,000 to the Zwicker and Company Ltd. building on the Lunenburg’s waterfront.
The funding will support stabilization of the structure and roofing work to update wood-framing dating back to the late 19th century.
It will also work to enhance the site for a growing boating market by locals and tourists.
Waterfront Development Acting President and CEO, Jennifer Angel says most buildings in the area weren’t built to last hundreds of years.
But she says cultural explorers, who make up majority of their tourism, want the authentic experience.
“Our challenge and opportunity is how do you marry the authentic working waterfront, which today is working, and it’s a lot of modern influence,” she says.
“How do you marry that with engaged and interested visitors.”
The money is for building stabilization and roofing work, as well to enhance the site for a growing boating market by locals and tourists.
Enhancements will include things like showers, accessible washrooms and a visitor reception area.
Majority of construction is expected to be complete by the summer boating season.
The rest is expected to be done by the fall.
