Harper Calls For Senate Reform, Won’t Make New Appointments

It’s a stunning announcement from the prime minister.

Stephen Harper says unless there’s reform, he won’t make another appointment to the Senate.

He made the comments late Friday during a stop in Regina.

Currently, there are 22 vacancies in The Red Chamber.

Meantime, NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the prime minister had ten years to make changes.

Mulcair quipped the senate is unelected, unaccountable and under indictment.

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau called it posturing on behalf of the Conservatives.

The moratorium on appointments comes just ahead of a federal election.
