Hope Springs Eternal For Queens County Walking Bridge

Renewed hope for a beloved walking bridge in Queens County.

The Trestle Trail Bridge has been closed since 2014 when it was deemed unsafe.

Mayor Christopher Clarke says a potential new funding option could make repairing the bridge a reality.

A local trail group called ‘Rails to Trails’ has offered funding in exchange for access to the link which connects Lunenburg County to Shelburne County through Queens.

“There will be a cost to us,” he says. “Before any money can be spent it will have to come back to council, but at least it gets the ball rolling. It offers hope to people who want that bridge open.”

Taking advantage of the offer from the group would require significant changes to the structure.

The completed bridge would need to allow for wheeled traffic including ATVs.

Clark says they’d also have to lift the ban on ATV traffic for a few other nearby trails.

The region has directed staff to find out how much other external funding is available.

The report is expected to come back before the end of the summer.

The estimated cost of the repairs is $750,000.
