Increase in Abandoned Cats on South Shore

A Nova Scotia small rescue is seeing a rise in cats being abandoned on the South Shore.
Inge Sadler with Pick of the Litter in Bedford rescues kittens from all across the province.
She says an increase of abandoned cats in the summer isn’t unusual but the number of cats for the area is.
“I’m not too sure, if it’s higher numbers or if we’re seeing less from this area (HRM)”, says Sadler.
Sadler notes Trap Neuter Release programs have helped lower the number of abandoned cats in the Halifax and adds that adding a program like that would help the South Shore area.
“The SPCA and Bide a While have low cost spay/neuters. If you have a feral cat out there, the SPCA mobile unit is going around to the different communities and they have spay and neuter days,’ says Sadler. “There is help out there you just have to go an look for it”.
Meanwhile the Lunenburg SPCA has had an increase as well in the numbers of kittens and cats in the area. SHAID however says their numbers have only been up very slightly since this time last year.
