The warden of the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth says the province must stop downloading shuttered schools on local governments.
The municipality will inherit the former Arcadia Elementary School, which closed in June 2016.
Some offices at the Yarmouth Hospital had been temporarily relocated to the building after a flood last December.
Leland Anthony says council now must determine the next steps.
“We may either try to put it up for sale or see if there’s some interest there for a project, along that line. We’re already in the process of getting it prepared for the winter months, basically boarding up the lower windows, making sure the furnace and everything is adequate, we have to cover the liability insurance on the building, it has to be inspected everyday.”
He says the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is talking with the Nova Scotia government about making changes in legislation but Anthony says that could be a lengthy process.
