Lack Of Casual Bus Drivers A Growing Frustration For Queens County Father

A Port Joli dad is growing frustrated with amount of times his daughter has been late coming home from school.

Travis Wolfe says his seven-year-old daughter’s school bus is supposed bring her home at around 3:20 in the afternoon.

However, many times throughout this school year, he says she’s been dropped off as late as 4 p.m.

“Every day is different and you don’t know how to plan, she has extracurricular activities and sometimes she gets home late and she doesn’t get to her skating on time.”

Wolfe says the root of the problem is a lack of casual bus drivers.

That means if the Port Joli or Port Mouton drivers are unable to work, the routes have to be doubled up.

“They’re supposed to be hiring more spare bus drivers but they’ve been saying that for three or four months and they still haven’t,” he says.

Meanwhile, South Shore Regional Centre for Education spokesperson Angelina McConnell says they’ve actively been trying to recruit casual bus drivers througout the year.

“We’ve been advertising for the job and we just haven’t been getting the applicants unfortunately,” she says. “If people are interested in becoming a casual bus driver, we would definitely encourage them to go to our website.”

McConnell says they have two casual bus drivers who are just finishing their training this week and they hope that alleviates some of the pressure on the permanent bus drivers.

She adds, the centre is also attending a job fair in the near future to find new recruits.
