Lack Of Emergency Preparedness Contributed To Fisherman’s Death: TSB

The death of a fishing boat captain could have been avoided if emergency measures were in place.

A report was released today by the Transportation Safety Board.

The captain of the ‘Four ladies 2003’ went overboard last March when lobster traps fell onto the main deck and knocked him off the boat.

It happened about 15 nautical miles south of Cape Sable Island.

In its investigation, the TSB states two other crew members did not have an emergency plan to follow, and did not practice retrieving a man overboard.

The captain was recovered by another boat and transported to hospital where he later died.

The TSB is calling for safety improvements in fishing operations.
