Largest Fundraising Year For Sgt. Derek Burkholder Trust

It’s the largest fundraising year for the Sgt. Derek Burkholder Memorial Trust.

Over $13,624 was raised through last month’s regimental ball.

The Lunenburg county police officer was killed in the line of duty during a domestic dispute on June 14, 1996.

Chairperson, Michael Power, believes Burkholder would be proud.

“He was a community-minded individual who paid the ultimate sacrifice, of course, and it’s an honour to be able to serve in his name because he served so well for us.”

Money will be used for scholarships to roughly 10 graduating high school students in Lunenburg county.

Power says the scholarships create a lasting legacy.

“To date, over 120 young men and women have received funding from the trust fund for their education.”

The scholarships are awarded to students who plan to focus on law enforcement or a related field as a career.

A golf tournament also contributes money to the trust fund.

It will be held June 9 at Osprey Ridge Golf Course in Bridgewater.
