Lobster Fishing Season Opens In District 34

Close to 5,000 fishermen headed out this morning to the lucrative lobster fishing grounds off the Atlantic coast. The annual season in District 34 began at 6 this morning (Saturday) and hundreds of boats left wharves in all the small ports from the Queens-Shelburne County border to Yarmouth and around to Digby. Traps are being dropped and lobster fishermen can begin harvesting their catches after midnight tonight (Saturday). The season began Friday morning in District 33, which stretches from the Eastern Shore near Halifax to Lunenburg and Queens Counties. It will be the first of next week before prices are determined. Many in the industry are predicting 6-dollar a pound lobster to start. Last year was a banner season for the crustaceons in both districts with prices hovering around $5.50 a pound. The season in both Districts 33 and 34 was delayed earlier this week because of bad weather.
