Lobster Fishing Season Start Delayed By 48 Hours

The start of the lobster fishing season has been delayed. Officials say forecasted weather conditions aren’t safe to send the boats out. The season was set to open this morning but has been moved ahead to Wednesday morning. DFO spokesman Frank Quinn says the decision was made during a conference call late last week involving fishermen. The delay covers LFA’s 33 and 34 – stretching along the coast from Halifax to Digby. Meanwhile, veteran South Shore lobster fisherman and captain Ashton Spinney says Dumping Day has its dangers and little wonder, its been put off for a couple of days. He tells us: “One day a tremendous amount of work to put 375 traps in the water and getting them where you want them and getting them there safely. That first day with a heavy load of traps is very, very dangerous.” Spinney says those in the industry now consider safety, a priority. “They’re more conscientous now about doing something on the safety part of it. I am proud the fishermen fully support that”, says Spinney. The lobster boats and their crews will now head out Wednesday morning at 7 o’clock, weather permitting.
