A Lunenburg native is representing the Atlantic region at the national female midget hockey championship.
Tait Hayden is at the Esso Cup in Sudbury, Ontario this week with her team Halifax Station Six Fire.
Bridgewater hosted the event last year and Hayden says she’s honoured to go from spectator to participant.
“I looked up to girls who went to the Esso Cup and played on Midget AAA teams and I strived to achieve that goal and this year I did. So I am extremely grateful and extremely proud of my team.”
Hayden, who plays defence says the team will be visiting a local elementary school to play road hockey with the students.
The 16-year-old is excited to share the message that girls can play hockey.
“Never lose sight of your goals. Things will be hard. People will try to push you down but you have to prove them wrong.”
The 2019 Esso Cup got underway Sunday.
Round robin play wraps on Thursday and the championship match will go Saturday.
