Low Snowfall Good For Town’s Bottom Line

Lower than average snowfall is good news for municipal budgets.

An interim report from Town of Lunenburg staff shows up until the end of January, they’ve spent just $50,000 of their $133,000 snow clearing budget.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says the $83,000 in savings is significant, but like a home budget, it doesn’t just get tucked away.

“It’s nice to come under budget in some areas because there may be other areas where we are over budget. And so those moneys are then spread throughout the whole of operating for the town.”

Bailey says it’s nice to see the savings but that’s not council’s goal.

“We try not to purposely create cushions because we want to use the money wisely and efficiently. But it’s good news when we see we’re underspending in an area you’re never certain of.”

Bailey says the budget is based on a five year average.

She anticipates more money will be spent on the forecasted snow, but it’s a good position to be in so late into the season.
