Lunenburg Council Hoping To Retrofit Town’s Courtroom

Lunenburg council is looking to the Province for clarity before making changes to the courtroom.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says they moved in to old courtroom shortly after she was elected to encourage more community engagement.

However, changes need to be made to make it feel more like a council chambers.

“We could, for example, make the U-shape broader. If you were here you would be facing council more directly,” said Bailey.

One of the first things she would like to do is remove a railing that separates council from the seating area for the public.

“We don’t want to have that perception that we are separating ourselves from everyone else. I think it’s a very concrete, visual thing,” explained Bailey.

The issue surfaced when an audio/visual system was recommended to help an audience hear better during council meetings.

Bailey says she needs the Province to give them permission before spending any money on retrofitting the space.
