Lunenburg County Group Fights To Save Decades-Old Wetland

Arties Pond in Broad Cove lies within the Atlantic Coastal Plain and is protected by the Department of Environment.

A local community group is concerned their treasured community feature and wetland is threatened by the actions of one land-owner who appears to have no regard for the habitat and fauna living in the pond.

The group has spent more than a year pressing the Department of Environment to take steps to protect the Artie’s Pond wetland.

Committee spokesperson, Peter Silver said the land-owner has installed a disposal system that is too close to the pond and has drained the water level several feet.

“It is a wetland. There are strict policies and rules and regulations governing the draining of wetlands. And there are other wetlands around here where the same [government] individuals have told people, no you don’t touch them,” explained Silver.

Silver said they’ve sent several emails and called many times but the department refuses to play ball.

The group wants the pond level restored and wetland maintained.
