A Lunenburg county man has been charged after robbing an elderly woman outside a Yarmouth grocery store.

Twenty-four-year-old Gary Junior Wamboldt of Upper Lahave was arrested yesterday.

According to the RCMP, a 67-year-old woman was getting into her vehicle in the parking lot of a grocery store in Yarmouth when Wamboldt approached her, pulled her out of her vehicle, threw her to the ground and took her purse and cell phone.

He sped off in her vehicle, while she was assisted by a passerby who helped her and phoned 911.

EHS treated her for minor injuries at the scene.

As the vehicle was leaving the scene, the suspect struck another vehicle on Starrs Road with the stolen car and did not stop.

He continued on to Highway 3 toward Arcadia and nearly struck a road worker at a construction site.

Witnesses told police they saw the suspect running into the woods.

Police contained the scene of the collision and the suspect surrendered to police a short time later and was arrested without incident.

He showed signs of impairment by drugs and police demanded a test, which he refused.

Wamboldt was remanded into custody and is facing the following charges.

– Robbery with violence
– Theft of a motor vehicle

– Failure to comply with a drug recognition expert demand
– Failure to remain at the scene of a collision
– Breach of conditions (three counts)
