As Yarmouth comes to grips with the tragedy, condolences are coming in from across the region.
Lunenburg’s Mayor Rachel Bailey calls the death at the Santa Claus parade any organizer’s worst nightmare.
“We just feel deeply for the family of the poor little girl who’s life was lost and for the community that is in mourning in Yarmouth.”
Four-year-old MaCali Cormier died after falling under a passing float during the Santa Claus Parade Saturday night.
Bailey has reached out to Yarmouth’s mayor to express condolences.
“We’re grieving, as I think anybody would be who considers what had occurred and how sad it is for everyone involved.”
Similarly to Yarmouth, the Lunenburg parade route also saw a number of cars parked along the street.
Bailey says safety measures are in place.
First responders line the route and participants are not permitted to throw candy from floats.
Instead they must walk alongside the floats and hand gifts to parade watchers.
Bailey says the town will wait for the results of the investigation into the accident before determining if anything needs to change to make Lunenburg’s parade safer.
