A Yarmouth man has been sent for an assessment after being charged with allegedly making a threat to engage in a shootout with RCMP officers in Yarmouth.
The assessment is to determine whether Robert Edward Dorey is criminally responsible and fit to stand trial.
Corporal Jennifer Clarke said a suspect was arrested around 5 p.m. Monday after a man had called a provincial news outlet and told them they should get a news crew to Yarmouth, because there was going to be a shootout with police at 10 ‘o’clock that night.
Police quickly located the suspect at a residence on Pleasant Street and contacted the man by phone.
He walked out of the house and was arrested without incident.
The RCMP searched the home and did not find any firearms.
Dorey is facing charges of uttering a threat by telephone to cause death or bodily harm to members of the Yarmouth RCMP and Breach of an Undertaking.
He faces six other charges resulting from alleged incidents in Meteghan Station on May 26.
Those charges include two counts of assaulting a peace officer, one count of resisting/obstructing a peace office, a charge of mischief and two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
Dorey has been remanded to custody and returns to court Monday June 17.
