Mandatory Helmets On The Way For Lunenburg Arena

Prepare to put your lid on when you take to the ice in Lunenburg.

Beginning this fall, everyone will be required to wear a helmet before stepping on to the ice.

Right now the rule only applies to people 16 years or younger.

Due to a couple of incidents over the season, it was decided to extend the policy to cover anyone on the ice.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says it’s a common sense policy.

“It had been instituted as a rule a couple of years ago for youth under a certain age. It just seemed wise that if it was a safety requirement for our children – then the adults safety was important to us too.”

Bailey says the town wants to provide a good environment for people to get out and enjoy themselves.

“The main thing I think is really safety. You just need to take the steps that are warranted. With any kind of ice sport, times have changed. People used to play hockey without wearing helmets.”

Bailey says there were a couple of minor incidents where adults had bumped their heads and it makes sense to make helmet use mandatory for all.

The mandatory helmet policy will take effect for the 2017-2018 season.
