MODL Shows It’s Pride

An historic moment for the Municipality of Lunenburg.

The rainbow flag is flying over the municipal offices for the first time.

It’s part of Pride Week which celebrates the LGBTQ community.

Judi Milne from Conquerall Bank has been working towards this moment for a long time.

“I never thought this day would really actually come,” she says. “To be a part of it really quite something. It’s a little heart pounding. Love, and tears, and Pride.”

The current rule means Milne will need to re-apply each year to have the flag raised.

“So, maybe we work on getting it to automatically go up. What do you think?”

Meanwhile, the move comes weeks after many other communities on the South Shore raised the pride flag to honour victims of a mass shooting in the U.S.

Mayor Don Downe says they weren’t in a position to respond then, but, he says, that doesn’t take away from the importance of this moment.

“I would have loved to have seen us have the ability to fly the flag eight years ago.Instead of looking in the rear-view mirror I’m looking forward.”

South Shore-St. Margaret’s MP Bernadette Jordan was also on hand and gave a speech about the importance of becoming an inclusive community that celebrates all it’s diverse residents.

The municipality is joined by Mahone Bay and Lunenburg who are also raising their flags for the first time.

Bridgewater, Liverpool and Shelburne will also be showing off their pride this week.
