MODL Supports Protection Of Vulnerable Fishing Waters

A group from Shelburne County wants local government to speak out against potential drilling sites.

John Davis, Director of Clean Ocean Action Committee says allowing oil companies to drill near George’s Bank could have grave consequences.

“There’s just ongoing activity with oil that creates oil spills,” he says “That’s the bottom line. The big issue is that oil kills fish.”

He says an oil spill could destroy the Nova Scotia fishing industry.

The Municipality of Lunenburg has agreed to write a letter urging the province to reconsider giving access to sites off the coast of Shelburne.

Davis says he hopes the letter will make a difference.

“If it doesn’t, it should. These are the people who are impacted, these are the people whose voices need to be heard.”

He says there needs to be a balance with oil companies that will allow the fishing industry to continue to thrive.

Davis will be approaching other communities in the coming months.
