Two Lunenburg County hockey players are preparing to play for the Canadian Hockey League’s top prize.
Bridgewater’s Keith Getson and Lunenburg’s Walter Flower will represent the Halifax Mooseheads when the team plays QMJHL rival Rouyn-Noranda for the Memorial Cup.
It’s a rematch of the President Cup Final, won by the Huskies in six games over the Mooseheads.
Rouyn-Noranda also beat Halifax 4-3 during the round robin.
Getson says he knows moments like this don’t come around often and hopes they can get one more win.
“Doing it so close to home and pretty much coming home halfway through the season and right at the end of my junior career, I can’t really put it into words how much this would mean to me.”
Flower says they’ve been preparing all season to get to this point.
“I’m not a nervous guy. It’s just going to be another game and I’m looking forward to it.”
For Getson, it will be his final game in junior hockey and is trying not to get too emotional.
Flower says he appreciates the support as they try to bring the cup back to Halifax.
“For all the people back home, I know me and Gets (Getson) really appreciate your support. Hopefully, we can get it for you guys.”
This will be just the second time two teams from the QMJHL will meet in the Memorial Cup final. The first time it happened was in 2006 when Quebec beat Moncton.
Halifax’s lone Memorial Cup title came in 2013 while the Huskies have never won it.
Tonight’s game at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax is sold out and will be shown on Rogers Sportsnet beginning at 8pm.
