N.S. Premier Calls On Ottawa To Increase Health Care Funding

The Premier wants the federal government to re-examine healthcare funding.

The formula that determines how much money each province receives was created under the previous Harper government.

Stephen McNeil wants more money to help care for an aging population.

He expressed his concerns at a meeting of Atlantic premiers in Annapolis Royal yesterday. “For a province like Nova Scotia and indeed all of the Atlantic provinces, the per capita formula affects us in a negative way.”

He says a united front will give Atlantic premiers a louder voice in Ottawa. “We need to make sure when we go to the national government, we go, when we can, as a united voice to give a strong pitch for the region of Atlantic Canada.”

The economy, energy, and high-speed internet were also on the agenda.

The premiers will pick up their discussions when they meet again in July.
