Archaeological Dig In Lunenburg Makes Discovery

An exciting discovery on the grounds of the Lunenburg Academy.

The search for an 18th century fort is off to a promising start after a group of students and archaeologists found a stone pipe over the weekend.

Project lead, Henry Cary says the area where they made the find didn’t have very strong indicators before they broke ground.

Which, he says, is good news for the rest of the project.

“For our more significant anomalies that we found on the property,” he says, “that means potential for finding buildings or that kind of thing goes up.”

He says the unexpected find was a welcome surprise.

“Whenever you’re looking at a large property and you’ve only got a few small meters in which to capture something, it’s great to be able to actually find something within those small windows that you have.”

Cary says it’s still too soon to know how much they’ll find.

But, he says, this discovery is a good sign of what could be under the surface.

He hopes the next dig in June will uncover more hidden treasures.
