New Seniors Housing Approved For Mahone Bay

New affordable housing for seniors has just been approved in the Town of Mahone Bay.

A public hearing for a 26 unit apartment building near Cara Lane took place late last week.

It’s a project developer Bob Youden says had more to do with heart than money.

“How many times would you want to tell somebody’s grandmother ‘I’m sorry you can’t move in ’cause you can’t afford it’?” he says. “You want something to pull at your heart strings come with me on a day when I’m turning people away.”

Youden says he’ll be working closely with homeowners nearby to make sure their concerns are dealt with.

He says there are also plans in the works for a similar development in Bridgewater.

Meanwhile, Mayor Joe Feeney says he’s hopeful the success of this project will draw other developers to the area.

“Anybody that comes along and is willing to take a chance with their money on a project like that is good news for us.”

The public still has two weeks to appeal the approval.

If no one comes forward Youden plans to begin construction in September.
