Nova Scotia Recognizes Day Of Mourning

Nova Scotians will take time today to remember people who died, were injured or became ill at work.

It’s the National Day of Mourning.

In 2015, almost 24,000 Nova Scotians were injured on the job and there were 27 workplace deaths.

CEO for the Workers Compensation Board, Stuart MacLean, says they need to learn from tragedies like Westray and the Miss Ally.

“If we don’t learn from those things, they will repeat themselves and we can’t be in that circumstance as a province. We need to find a way to create safer workplaces where people come home to their families at the end of the day.”

Ceremonies will be held across Nova Scotia including at 12:15 p.m in Yarmouth at at the Fisherman’s Memorial on Water Street.

Another local ceremony at 6 p.m in Lunenburg on the waterfront at the Fisherman’s Memorial.
