NS Government Proposes Changes To Marriage Act

Government is proposing changes to the way people marry in Nova Scotia.

They are designed to make the act more inclusive and easier to understand.

The name will change from the Solemnization of Marriage Act to the Marriage Act.

The updates include requiring both parties to fill out the paperwork to be married and removing the authority for people under 16 years of age to marry.

It also removes outdated language like “spinster” and “illegitimate child”.

Specific religious references will also be removed to make the act more inclusive to people of all faiths.

The bill was introduced in the legislature yesterday.
