It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of George William Sawler, age 83, of Western Shore, on Monday, October 19, 2026, at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater. George was the beloved son of the late Clyde and Alice (Adams) Sawler.
George was born and raised in Western Shore and later, he and his wife built their home and raised their family there. His strong work ethic showed early when he entered trade school at age fifteen to train as an electrician. After working as an inspector with the IBEW, he went on to serve more than twenty-five years at the Halifax Shipyard until his retirement.
An avid outdoorsman, George was passionate about hunting and fishing. He enjoyed time spent in the woods and at camp. He also enjoyed many lively afternoons at the Western Shore Legion, playing Auction, 45’s and Crib. A highlight of his life was traveling to Ottawa with his son Chris in 2019 to compete in the National Cribbage Tournament, a memory he treasured and spoke of often.
A quiet and thoughtful man, George formed deep, intentional friendships. While reserved, he had a unique way of making his feelings clear if tested. Over the last few years, the warmth and companionship of his care team provided him with great comfort and joy.
George will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Kevin (Catherine Mosher) of Marriott’s Cove and Chris (Julianne Neely), of Beech Hill; his sister, Roxie Bremner of Chester; his grandchildren, Brennan, Cameron and Olivia; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Carolyn; as well as his brothers Russell (Jerry), Clyde Jr., and sisters Anna Sawler and Nancy Tessier.
George’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his entire care team for the tremendous amount of care they provided to him. He had many home care workers who made his days brighter. A special thank you to Lunenburg County Home Support, Lynn Key and Heart to Heart.
Following George’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside committal service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Ron Barkhouse officiating. Following the service, family and friends are invited to the Western Shore Legion for time of fellowship. Arrangements are in the care of Personal Care Cremations & Memorial Services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the Western Shore Legion or a charity of your choice.
