Hazel Greene

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Hazel Dorothy Patricia Greene, who transitioned on to the spirit world on October 20th, 2026, at the age of 73.

Born on March 26, 1953, Hazel was a pillar of love, strength, and warmth to everyone who knew her. Her life was defined by her devotion to her family, her kind spirit, and the joy she brought into the lives of others.

Hazel was well known as an amazing cook and baker. Many will remember her for her delicious food. She loved to sew; she made many beautiful things with her hands and a needle and thread. She was well known for her love of butterflies, many of her children and grandchildren have gotten butterfly tattoos in memory of her.

Hazel’s greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She was the loving and cherished mother of Steven (Stevie) Pennell, Joseph “Jay” (Cait) Pennell, and Heather (Ron) O’leary. She poured her heart into raising them, teaching them the values of family, kindness, love, resilience and strength. She always taught her children to stick together through good times and bad. Her legacy lives on through the love she shared with them every day.

She is survived by her three children, her grandchildren; Melissa Pennell, April Pennell, l Thomas O’Leary (Jobean), Jillian O’Leary, Lacey Pennell, Kayden Pennell, Mason Pennell, Cedric Pennell, and her two great grandsons; Carter Pennell, Noah Pennell; as well as her sisters; Glenda (Jimmy) Beazley, Devina (Miles) Bonnar, Rose (Rod) Sparks,  Karen (Pierre) Bertrand, Wanda (Allen) MacDonald, and brothers; Joseph (Joe) Greene and Arnold Greene; former daughter-in-law, Monica Pennell, and a large circle of extended family and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

She was predeceased by her parents: James (Jimmy) Greene and Winnifred (Jean) Greene, and by her sisters: Rosalyn (Gerald) Martell, Faith Greene and her brother Richard (Rick) Greene, brother in laws Gerald Martell and Allan MacDonald.

A service to celebrate Hazel’s beautiful life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 1-5 p.m. at the Gold River Community Centre, Gold River. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gold River After School program c/o Wasoqop’aq First Nation in Hazel’s memory.
