Competition can be a building block to education.
A group of students from Petite Riviere Elementary School students learned that last week when they entered the regional Lego league robotics competition for the first time.
The tournament has been hosted by Lunenburg Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College for a number of years.
Lief Helmer, one of the parents brought the idea forward and coached the students.
Principal Scott Rawding says it’s one more avenue to teach kids new skills in a fun way.
“That being the only South Shore Regional School Board team, I think it just isn’t out there enough yet,”
“I think we have, hopefully, set it as a good example that it is something that could be great for your school.”
Rawding says it doesn’t cost a lot to get a starter kit and begin creating.
“You have a brain of the Lego, like a computer, then you program that computer to do movement with the Lego, then you have head-to-head competitions with another team.”
Rawding hopes now that PRES has broken ground that other area schools will start their own teams as well.
