After more than a year without a contract the province and the teachers union have come to a tentative agreement.
No details are being released until the unions 10,000 members ratify the deal.
Union President Liette Doucet says the next step is to meet with the provincial executive on September 15.
“We will share with them the details of the tentative agreement,” she says, “and the provincial executive will make a decision as to whether they’re going to recommend the membership accept or reject.”
Another agreement was rejected by the union late last year triggering a new round of negotiations that began in January.
The union is expected to bring it to a vote in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Karen Casey says as a former teacher her first priority is the children.
“An improvement in the teaching environment for teachers and the learning environment for students is what we both want and that is our ultimate goal.”
Casey says if this deal is ratified it will be in place until 2020.
