Lunenburg dog owners are not about to roll over on a decision to keep their pets out of the post office.
Canada Post no longer allow dogs in the Lunenburg branch after they received complaints of dogs barking and being unruly.
Judith Fields owns a dog but she says she understands why people would be afraid of dogs in the post office.
“I was there one day when three dogs were barking. And they were barking at each other, straining on their leashes, trying to get to each other. I don’t know if they would’ve got into a fight or if they just wanted to play.”
Fields says the problem is with owners not controlling their pets.
“Some adults are afraid of dogs. They don’t want dogs approaching them and I totally understand that. So anyone bringing a dog into the post office should keep them under better control.”
Lunenburg resident, Jennifer Harrison doesn’t feel it’s fair to ban all dogs because of the poor behaviour of a few.
“Every time I go, I see lots of dogs. You know, it’s the highlight of their day. And it encourages conversation and community and people meet each other. A lot of the people I know I met at the post office.”
Harrison frequently takes her dog with her to collect her mail and she wants Canada Post to reconsider their decision.
“It’s just a couple of people have complained. So I had the idea that if more people complained so say that they want their dogs there then maybe we could get it reversed.”
When reached for comment, all Canada Post would say is they are reviewing that local decision.
