Province Cuts Funding To Walk-To School Program

The Ecology Action Centre in Halifax is crying foul after provincial funding for its walk-to-school program was 100 per cent cut.

The program has been around for 12 years and in 24 schools across Nova Scotia.

The provincial government slashed $105,000 from its budget.

It includes the $50,000 walk-to-school program along with a $55,000 municipal active transportation project.

Active Transportation Coordinator, Janet Barlow, says they could understand cuts up to 50 per cent.

“Lots of organizations are seeing cuts and we probably would not have raised an eyebrow had we received that kind of cut, but this is a 100 per cent cut, very few organizations have been cut 100 per cent.”

It impacts about 2,000 students.

Barlow hopes the government will reconsider the move.
