Province Develops New Literacy Strategy

Thousands of Nova Scotians have told the government children aren’t being taught to read and write well enough at school.

In response, Education Minister Karen Casey just announced $3.2 million dollars in funding to improve literacy skills in students.

Casey says the funding will compliment changes to the curriculum that will see greater attention paid to spelling and grammar in all subjects.

“Where there’s more reading and more comprehension and more content – if they have those skills in place their chance of success at the upper grades is greatly improved.”

Twenty-four new teachers will be hired to directly assist students and 28 literacy leads will help teachers develop better teaching methods.

The new strategy will affect all grade levels and will be in place this fall.

The full strategy can be read here.
