People in the Village of Chester hoping to get municipal water may have years to wait.
Council members unanimously voted to continue monitoring water quality at Spectacle Lake.
The municipality believes the site would be an ideal location to build a water system, but they have no intention of doing so any time soon.
Councillor Andre Veinotte says it isn’t practical.
“We have conflicting objectives here,” he says. “If we want to have a quaint village where density is low, I’m not sure how a municipal infrastructure such as a water system can be achievable.”
Veinotte says the cost of hooking up so few houses would be more than most could afford.
He says constructing a water system would cost around $13-million which would translate to about $20,000 per household just to get it off the ground, with another $700/year to maintain.
The municipality has been paying about $3,500 a year to monitor the lake since 2009.
