Province Providing Cash For National Womens Hockey Championships

A national hockey tournament being held in Bridgewater just picked up some cash from the province.

The Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre will welcome the best female midget hockey players in the country when it hosts the Esso Cup this April.

Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey was at the LCLC Saturday to announce the provincial government’s contribution of $20,000 to support the event.

“A great opportunity not only for the young female hockey players. Really, the foundation and the program that prepares them and gives them the opportunity to aspire to the women’s Olympic team.”

A former hockey coach, Furey is excited to have women’s hockey showcased so prominently in the South Shore.

“Hockey instills in people, character. It instills skill sets that will allow them a level of confidence and ability to be successful in whatever they choose to pursue in their future.”

Furey says women’s hockey is making great strides in the South Shore due to the committed volunteers, parents, staff and players.
