Province won’t force vaccine mandates on municipalities

The province doesn’t have any plans to force vaccine mandates on municipalities.

John Lohr, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, said it’s up to each municipal unit.

“We don’t impose provincial decisions on municipalities that often,” he said. “It’s a separate level of government, so they have a right to make decisions as they see necessary.”

He said it’s not the province’s place to tell local officials how to run their business.

Lohr said they’re the ones on the ground.

“They’re well aware of their own set of risks and the risks in their community,” he said. “We’re not intending, my department, to force municipalities to take this step, it’s up to them.”

He said he does support municipalities who choose to put in vaccine mandates for staff.
