Public shows support for Canada’s trade talk stance

Elbows appear to remain up across Canada.

An Angus Reid survey shows strong public support (76%) for the Carney government’s decision not to give in to the U.S. demands on a new trade deal.

The strongest support is in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces, where support reaches nearly 85%.

Most respondents also favour dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs against those imposed by President Trump.

However, the survey finds that nearly 40 percent of respondents express concern about their jobs due to the lack of a trade deal.

One-quarter worry about the damage caused by the dispute on future relations between the two countries.

Two-thirds say despite the turbulence, the nation will emerge “stronger.”
