Youth programs across Queens county will have to find a new source of funding.
After 27 years, the Queens County Crime Prevention Association is folding.
It was first formed in 1991 to help keep youth educated, occupied and off the streets by supporting scholarship, sport and recreational programs.
Brian Godfrey with the association says they want the program to continue, but they’ve run into age, health and building issues.
“And it’s harder to get younger people to jump in and take over, we’ve tried,” he says.
“When you run these projects you’ve got to depend on your volunteers to get there and sometimes they jsut don’t make it.”
Godfrey says they started in 1991 with the goal to help support youth.
“There’s a lot of trouble around, a lot of young people getting into trouble and things like this,” he says.
“Snd just trying to find ways of raising money to help these other groups like Minor Hockey Blades, and things for the kids to get into, instead of sitting on the streets.”
Godfrey says their remaining funds are being distributed to local community groups, like:
Receiving $1500 , Liverpool Regional High School for their scholarship program.
The following groups will receive $1250 each, Queens Co Minor Hockey Association, Queens Co. Blades, JC Wickwire School for their breakfast program, South Queens Middle School for their meal program, Queens Care Society for their transport program and the Senior Safety program for Queens Co.
If there is another group interested in continuing the monthly breakfasts please contact a member and they would be happy to provide the equipment needed.
