Not every student can afford breakfast.
The John C. Wickire Academy spends $400 a month to make sure each student has access to a healthy meal.
Part of that funding came from a program that’s now folding.
After 27 years the Queens County Crime Prevention Association is distributing their remaining $9,000 to programs in the area.
J.C. Wickwire got a $1200 piece.
Vice-Principal Cathy Shaw says the Association helped fund a program providing roughly 20 per cent of the energy and nutrients students need throughout their day.
“The well-nourished students are well prepared to learn then,” she says.
“So the breakfast programs have been foundt o decrease student absinteeism and increase student performance.”
Shaw says she’s sad to see them fold after all they’ve done to help give students the best school experience.
The Breakfast Program is receiving a piece of the $9,000 leftover in the Crime Association’s funds.
The Association funded local sport, scholarship and rec. programs in Queens County.
