RCMP are reminding drivers to take some extra time and slow down this week as students are back to school.
Staff Sergeant Steven McQueen says RCMP will be approaching safety on a number of fronts.
Police presence will be higher in school zones.
As well, speed trailers will be out to show people how fast they’re going in the 30km/h school zones.
McQueen says RCMP will be following school busses to ensure drivers aren’t passing when the red lights are flashing.
“We got some complaints about school busses activating their red lights and people driving through. We don’t use discretion with that. That is a ticket. If you do, do that, because of the high risk you are going to receive a ticket for that.”
McQueen says marked and unmarked cars will be following busses to keep kids safe.

He says it’s more important than ever for drivers to be attentive.
“What drivers need to be aware of is that kids now, they have more electronic devices. They’re texting while they’re walking, they’re stepping onto the streets, they’re excited about school – they’re very distracting so keep that in mind.”
McQueen says their goal is to educate the public but they will ticket where necessary.
