A municipal clerk is doing some housekeeping with the Region of Queens policies and bylaws.
Council was told by Anne MacDonnell recently that the municipality has a total of 177 policies and bylaws; just over two times as many as the top performing municipal units in Nova Scotia.
The Department of Municipal Affairs says the average municipal unit has 81.
A plan was approved to review policies to look at outdated content, identify gaps and opportunities to repeal or merge them.
Mayor David Dagley says they are looking to improve governance.
“To say that we have more than others, I’m sure we have some that can be amalgamated. Perhaps other municipal units have not had the vision to see the issues that we have and controlled by a bylaw. It could be a mix.”
Dagley doesn’t believe there is a lack of organization but feels a review will help improve their system.
Council is expected to receive updates on the process every four to six weeks.
Staff anticipates the review could take up to a year to complete.
