Hundreds gathered at the Lunenburg waterfront to remember fishermen lost at sea.
The Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Service has been part of Suzy Whynott’s life for 43 years.
Her brother Gregory was lost at sea on a scallop trip on George’s Bay.
He was 16 years old when a blinding snow storm capsized the boat.
“It was his first trip out to sea and it was his last and his body was never found, so there is still a big void there because we didn’t have anybody to say goodbye to.”
This year, Whynott brought her brother’s great grandneice MacKenzie Green to participate in the ceremony.
Whynott hopes Green will carry on the tradition for many more years to come.
It was an emotional day as well for Errol Knickle who lost his father, grandfather and three uncles.
“My son and daughter never knew my father, he was lost in 1961, I was only 16. I didn’t know my grandfather, he was lost in 1927, or my uncles.”
Knickle says the moving ceremony is a special time for his entire family.
He says it’s important for his grandchildren to understand the tribute.
It is recognized every year by the town of Lunenburg.
