Robing Ceremony To Be Held For New Judge Benton

A Lunenburg County woman will officially be recognized as a judge this week.

Although Catherine Benton was appointed to the bench on January 23, a robing ceremony will be held for her in Bridgewater on Friday.

Benton, who is from Auburndale, is the first Mi’kmaw woman to become a judge in Nova Scotia.

She was a lawyer for 22 years.

Benton worked as a researcher with the Union of Nova Scotia Indians and the Mi’kmaq Grand Council before getting her law degree from Dalhousie University in 1993.

She also received her Queens Counsel designation last January.
