Rogart Mountain Hiking Trail

Rogart Mountain is one of the more popular mountain hikes in the Cobequids. One reason being the amount of diversity you see on this trail.

Along the way you’ll pass signs containing stories about early settlers, a waterfall, and a couple lookoffs near the mountain top. Not to mention a great restaurant at the trailhead, in Sugar Moon Farm!

Finding the Trail

From Truro, take Highway 311 for 26km. Turn left onto Alex MacDonald Road. Just over a kilometre later you’ll arrive at Sugar Moon Farm. In the back left corner of the lot, you’ll see several signs containing trail information, as well as the trail itself.

This trail is a loop. I will be writing from a clockwise perspective.

The trail starts with an easy walk through the woods. As mentioned, you’ll pass several info signs – great spots for a rest and to learn the history of the area.

About 1.5km in, the elevation starts to increase as you push towards the summit. There aren’t any notably steep areas, rather a longer gradual incline. After approximately 2.75km into the hike, you’ll hit the main lookoff.

The mountain top consists of a small clearing in the trees with a bench and a south facing view of surrounding forests. While this peak isn’t particularly prominent, the highest point clocks in at over 320m, a respectable height for mainland Nova Scotia. Not long after leaving the first lookoff, you’ll come to a second one that looks over a nearby windfarm.

The descent takes you gradually down the mountain’s north face. The highlight here is Janes Falls. Once at the bottom, the trail joins a dirt road that leads you back to the trailhead.
